Charities belonging to St. Nicholas's Parish:- About the
year 1667, Mr. and Mrs. Offley, left 40s. a year for the
poor of the parish, out of the Unicorn Inn, in Holborn, and it
is now paid by the Draper's Company. In 1758, Mary Wiseman
left £30 Old South Sea Annuities, and directed the yearly
dividends (18s.) to be divided in bread among 24 poor widows.
In 1735 Giles Baker left a yearly rent-charge of £3,
out of a house in Castlegate street, for three poor widows of
seamen, appointed by the aldermen. Four almshouses, which
afterwards formed part of the Workhouse, and as such have been sold,
were built about 1718, at a cost of £212 given by the
Corporation, and £20 given by Daniel Smyth. Two small
Almshouses, in West street, were given by an unknown donor,
and are occupied by four poor widows. The SAVINGS BANK, at the
Guildhall, was established in 1818, and in 1847 had deposits
amounting to £12,786. Mr. Fras. Hales is the actuary,
and Mr. B. Goodwin, clerk.
