The following are extracts from the History, Gazetteer,

RamseyRAMSEY parish has a large village, called Ramsey Street, on the eastern side of a small navigable creek, 3 miles W.S.W, of Harwich; and contains 649 inhabitants, and 3603 acres of land, extending northwards to the south bank of the estuary of the Stour, where a small projecting point of land, called Ray Island, juts into the estuary, at the mouth of the creek, and forms the western side of Harwich harbour. A fair is held in the village on the 15th. of June. The parish has generally a fertile soil, and extends eastward to the ocean, including many scattered farm houses &c. It belonged to Ralph Baynard, at the Norman Survey, and is now in seven MANORS, viz., Michaelstowe, East New Hall, Stroudland, and Ray belongs to E. W. Garland, Esq.; Ramsey Hall belonging to James Harvey, Esq.; Royden Hall, held by James Barker, jun., of Stour Hall, a large and handsome mansion; and Foulton Hall and Hill House, belonging to W. Caldecott and John Hempson, Esqrs. About 42 years ago, nearly 1500 acres were added to Mr. Garland's estate by embankments in the estuary of the Stour. The Church (St. Michael), is an ancient Gothic structure, with a square embattled tower, containing five bells. The church was rebuilt in 1597, and has an inscription in memory of Sir Thomas Davall, Kt., who was one of the representatives in all the parliaments of King William, and the two first of Queen Anne. The church was appropriated to St. Osyth Prior. The discharged vicarage, valued in K.B. at £15, and in 1841 at £240, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. S. N. Bull, M.A., of Dovercourt, for whom the Rev. Wm. Bull, MA., officiates, and occupies the Vicarage House and 11A. of glebe. The great tithes belong to the landowners, and the vicarial tithes were commuted in 1847 for £300 per annum. Here is a small Wesleyan Chapel built in 1825. The poor parishioners have about £16 yearly in clothing, from Henry Smith's Charities distributed by the churchwardens. They have also the dividends of £166. 13s. 4d. three per cent, Consuls, left by Major General Burr, in 1807; and a yearly rent-charge of 52s. left by Robt. Hurlock in 1650, out of a farm belonging to the Mason family. For teaching 12 poor boys, the Schoolmaster has the dividends of £469. 18s. New South Sea Annuities, left by Thos. Davall in 1771. A Girl's School is supported by Mrs. Gurney, with the aid of 1d. each per week from the scholars. POST OFFICE at Ellis's. Letters desp. via Harwich, 4 afternoon. | |
